Getting started
“Japanese summers are so humid — I’m shaving almost every day.” “The razors I used back home are hard to find here.” We often hear comments like these from people who have moved to Japan from abroad.
Body hair is a personal matter, but the climate, lifestyle and even the shops around you change when you move countries. In this series, we look at hair-related concerns common among international residents and how medical laser hair removal can be one option. First, let’s cover the basics of full-body hair removal in Japan.
Why hair becomes a bigger concern after moving to Japan
Many people find that hair care takes more effort in Japan than it did at home. Some common reasons include:
Hot, humid summers — sweat, stuffiness and odor can become more noticeable
Shaving more often — short sleeves and shorts for months at a time
Unfamiliar products — razors, creams and waxing kits you used before may be hard to find
Shaving irritation — redness, bumps and ingrown hairs from frequent shaving
None of this is a problem you have to solve, of course. But if daily grooming feels like a chore, reducing the hair itself is one way to lighten the load.
Medical laser vs. salon hair removal in Japan
In Japan, hair removal is broadly offered in two places: medical clinics and beauty salons. The difference matters.
Medical laser hair removal (clinics)
Laser treatment that targets the hair root with enough energy to affect hair growth is considered a medical procedure in Japan, so it is performed at medical institutions under a doctor’s supervision. If skin trouble occurs, a doctor can examine you and respond.
Salon light treatments (beauty salons)
Salons typically use light-based devices at a lower output. Because they are not medical institutions, they cannot diagnose or prescribe if a skin reaction occurs.
Know what you are signing up for.
When comparing options in Japan, check whether the place is a medical clinic, who performs the treatment, and what happens if your skin reacts. These points are easy to miss when information is only in Japanese.
Why many people choose “full body”
Treating one area at a time is perfectly fine. Still, many people eventually find that once one area is smooth, the untreated areas start to stand out. Planning a full-body course from the beginning can make scheduling simpler.
Areas commonly included in full-body treatment:
Arms, hands and fingers
Legs, knees and feet
Underarms
Chest, abdomen and back
Bikini / VIO area
Face (depending on plan)
At our clinic, nose hair, ear hair, and the areas above and between the brows can also be treated with GentleMax. We cover this in detail in Article 02.
About GentleMax, the laser we use
Our clinic uses GentleMax, a laser device with two wavelengths: an Alexandrite laser (755 nm) and an Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm). Having two wavelengths means the setting can be chosen according to your skin tone and hair type — a helpful point for a clinic seeing patients from many backgrounds.
The device also has a cooling system that sprays a cooling gas onto the skin just before each pulse, which helps reduce heat on the skin surface. The settings and suitability are decided by a doctor at consultation.
