Skin Tone, Hair Color & Laser|How GentleMax’s Two Wavelengths Help

Skin tone and hair color

“Can laser be used on darker skin?” “My skin is very fair but my hair is dark — is that a problem?” “My hair is blonde. Will it work?” Questions about skin tone and hair color come up often from international patients.

The answer depends on how laser hair removal works. Once you understand the basics, it becomes easier to see why GentleMax’s two wavelengths are helpful — and where the limits are.

How laser hair removal works

Laser hair removal uses light that is absorbed by melanin, the pigment in hair. The absorbed energy turns into heat, which affects the structures around the hair root that are involved in hair growth.

The key point: skin also contains melanin. So the laser has to be chosen and set so that it reaches the hair while keeping the burden on the skin as low as possible. This is why both skin tone and hair color matter.

GentleMax’s two wavelengths

GentleMax has two types of laser in one device, and the doctor chooses between them based on your skin and hair.

Alexandrite laser (755 nm)

Well absorbed by melanin, and commonly used for lighter skin types with dark hair.

Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm)

A longer wavelength that reaches deeper and is less absorbed by the melanin in the skin surface. It is commonly used for darker skin types and for deep-rooted, coarse hair.

Two wavelengths, more flexibility.

Having both options in one device means treatment can be adjusted to the person rather than the person adjusting to the device — useful when patients come from many different backgrounds.

Darker skin and tanned skin

Naturally darker skin is not a reason to give up on laser hair removal. With suitable settings such as the Nd:YAG wavelength, treatment can often be considered.

However, a fresh tan is different. Recently tanned skin tends to react more strongly to laser, so treatment may need to be postponed or settings adjusted.

Self-tanning products should also be mentioned at consultation

Blonde, red, grey or white hair

This is an important point to be honest about. Because laser targets melanin, hair with little pigment — such as blonde, light red, grey or white hair — may respond poorly or not be suitable for laser hair removal.

Many people have a mix: darker hair in some areas and lighter hair in others. We check each area at consultation and explain honestly which areas are likely to respond and which may not.

Tell us about your skin and hair in advance

If you’re unsure whether laser suits you, please send us a message on our official LINE before booking. Sharing a little information beforehand helps make the consultation smoother.

Your skin type — for example, whether you tan easily or burn easily

Your hair color in the areas you want to treat

Recent sun exposure or tanning

Any skin conditions, medications or past reactions to laser treatment

Summary|The right setting starts with knowing your skin

Skin tone and hair color are not about “good” or “bad” — they simply change how the laser should be chosen and set. GentleMax’s two wavelengths allow treatment to be adjusted to many skin types, but hair with little pigment has limits. We would rather tell you that honestly at the start.

Next time, we’ll look at razor bumps and ingrown hairs — a common frustration for people who shave often.
