Planning your treatment
“I’m only in Japan for two more years — is that enough time?” “What happens if I move back home in the middle of treatment?” International residents often have one more thing to consider: how long they will be staying in Japan.
Laser hair removal takes place over months, not days. In this final article, we explain why multiple sessions are needed, the typical intervals, and how to plan treatment around your life in Japan.
Why multiple sessions are needed
Hair grows in a cycle: a growth phase, a transition phase and a resting phase. Laser works mainly on hair in the growth phase, when the hair is still connected to the root. At any given time, only part of your hair is in that phase.
That is why one session only reaches some of the hair, and treatment is repeated as other hairs enter the growth phase. The number of sessions varies by area, hair type and individual — many people need several sessions or more before they feel a clear difference.
How far apart sessions are
Intervals are set according to the hair growth cycle of each area. As a general guide:
Face (including nose, ears and brow area) — often around every 1–2 months
Body — often around every 2–3 months
Later sessions — intervals may become longer as hair decreases
These are only general guides. The doctor will suggest a schedule based on your skin and how your hair responds.
If your time in Japan is limited
A limited stay doesn’t mean you can’t start. It just means planning becomes more important.
Tell us your expected departure date — we’ll consider the schedule with that in mind
Start sooner rather than later — sessions are spaced out, so the calendar matters
Prioritize areas — decide which areas matter most to you if time is short
Consider continuing abroad — the areas and settings used here can be useful to share with a clinic in your next country
Your schedule is part of the plan.
Contract periods, visa renewals, trips home and moving dates all affect how treatment fits into your life. Let us know on LINE — it helps us suggest a realistic plan.
Before and after each session
Before
Shave the treatment areas the day before
Avoid plucking, waxing and hair-removal creams
Avoid tanning; use sunscreen daily
Let us know about any new medications or skin changes
After
On the day of treatment, avoid activities that heat the body — long hot baths, saunas, intense exercise and heavy drinking
Moisturize gently; avoid scrubbing the treated areas
Protect treated skin from the sun, especially during Japan’s summer
If redness, pain or blistering continues, contact the clinic
